Coral Reefs of the High Seas Coalition
A global alliance of partners that aims to protect coral reefs in areas beyond national jurisdiction, also known as the High Seas.
The Coalition seeks to generate the science, strategic communication, and political support that is necessary to catalyze action. We do this by convening experts and organizations focused on conservation that previously worked in isolation.
Why focus on the High Seas?
The High Seas covers more than 61% of our ocean’s surface and 73% of its volume. This vast area provides vital ecosystem services that are critical for sustaining life on Earth, such as producing half of the oxygen we breathe, capturing over 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide each year, and containing 90% of all life in the ocean. Yet, only 1% of the High Seas is protected, despite widespread threats from overfishing, plastic pollution and climate change, with seabed mining looming in the near future.
